24 July | Government of France Latest to Support UNIFEM’s Afghanistan Programme
United Nations, New York - The Government of France is the latest to join a number of partners supporting the UNIFEM programme in Afghanistan, contributing 500,000 Euro to strengthen women's access to justice. Funding from governments and other donors provides critical resources for UNIFEM’s work in Afghanistan to advance women's human rights and economic opportunities, reduce discrimination and violence against women, and ensure their participation in the political process, including the presidential elections in August.
In June, the Government of Sweden contributed around US$7.6 million to fund UNIFEM's programme proposal in the areas of strategic planning, women’s livelihood, elimination of violence against women, peace building and implementation of the National Action Plan for the Women of Afghanistan. The Government of Canada likewise contributed close to US$2 million to UNIFEM's work to support the participation of women in the upcoming elections.
Other donors that have helped to make UNIFEM's work in Afghanistan possible include Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland, United Kingdom, UNHCHR, UNHCR and UNICEF. Many governments also provide donations to core funds that enable UNIFEM to offer essential organizational and technical support to the programmes in Afghanistan and around the world.
In addition, a number of UNIFEM National Committees have provided valuable support, and in light of the urgency of supporting Afghan women as candidates and as voters, the Union of Danish Soroptimists recently raised US$14,400 for UNIFEM's programme.
