International Women's Day 2005

Gender Equality Beyong 2005: Building a More Secure Future

UNIFEM Afghanistan Statement

Today while we are celebrating one important element of human diversity, we are also trying to understand how a simple sex difference between man and woman can make such a considerable difference in the realization of human potential to its fullest extent.

On this day we commend women’s struggle for gender equality and equal opportunities and participation across nations, while at the same time try to understand why women have to struggle so hard to achieve gender equality despite the evident commitments and obligations that have found their articulation through various movements, speeches, conventions and declarations in the last decades.

On this day, we dream of a world in which human diversity, including gender, race, class, ethnicity and religion are celebrated, rather then used as a pretext for discrimination, marginalization and violence.

Afghanistan is not alone in its struggle for gender equality, peace and development. There are millions of women and men from different walks of life that are calling for a more equitable and just world. We join our voices with them, and ask for tolerance, peace and justice to prevail.

Happy Women’s Day
