In 2006 the Government of Afghanistan will undergo the massive task of reviewing all existing trade laws and/or policies. This exercise will be supported by different international agencies and ministries. This paper will help stimulate discussion and inform policy-making processes around trade policies and their possible impacts on women and men. We believe that such discussions are important to analyze the dynamics between trade policies, gender inequalities, growth and poverty.

To establish the "Afghan Women's Business Council", a series of meetings have been organized by UNIFEM for NGOs focusing on economic empowerment and business women, which has led to the establishment of an Advisory Committee. The meetings have also contributed to the organization of a mission by the US an Canadian businesswomen, and a conference on women's economic empowerment in June 2003.
