The Elimination of Violence Against Women (EVAW)

UNIFEM has taken the lead in advocating for the elimination of all forms of violence against women in Afghanistan in all levels of society and government. Assistance includes research, database development, policy development, law reform, law enforcement training and legal awareness. The Eliminiation of Violence Against women (EVAW) Unit currently focuses on the following activities:

The EVAW Consultative Group

The EVAW Consultative Group was established in 2004 to promote consultation among stake-holders and avoid the duplication of efforts for more effective programmes and activities related to EVAW. With a strategic framework in place, the group analyzes the quality of current activities and discusses how successful programmes can be replicated in throughout the country. more »

The EVAW Commission

The EVAW Commission’s goal is to identify, analyze and, in cooperation with involved agencies, put efforts to eliminate violence against women at the forefront of policy development. Therefore, in accordance with the Constitution of Afghanistan new [PDF], gender equality and justice can be achieved. more »

Violence Against Women (VAW) Database

In order to correctly evaluate the extent of violence against women (VAW) in Afghanistan, UNIFEM is assisting in the development of databases of violence cases in the provinces. These databases allow UNIFEM to provide knowledgable recommendations to policy-making bodies as well as address the specific needs of victims of violence.

A secondary database was completed in May 2006, and a primary database collection mechanism is currently being implemented throughout the country. more »

EVAW Special Fund

The UN Trust Fund in Support of Actions to Eliminate Violence against Women was established by General Assembly Resolution 50/166 in 1996 with UNIFEM as the Fund's administrator. That resolution positioned the Trust Fund as a key mechanism in advancing action to address violence against women as set out in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

In Afghanistan, an EVAW Special Fund has been established to support ongoing activities in the protection from, and prevention of violence. more »

16 Day Campaign to Eliminate Violence Against Women in Afghanistan

Traditional Dispute Mechanisms

Traditional dispute management, often referred to as informal judicial processes, are widely used in local communities of Afghanistan to solve domestic, as well as communal issues that arise.

These include jirgas, or meetings of local elders and respected members of the community, whereby disputes such as land ownership, inheritance and domestic issues are discussed and solutions are implemented. Domestic Violence Bill

A Domestic Violence bill is currently being finalized in cooperation with government, civil society organizations and ministers of parliament. The final bill is expected to be complete by March 2008.
