Paralegal Training Programme
UNIFEM has taken the lead in implementing Afghanistan's first national paralegal training programme.
The aim of this project is to provide legal aid where it is needed but unavailable. Legal aid will be provided by Afghans through the paralegal training course, which is monitored by selected NGOs in order to increase women's participation in, and access to, the justice system.
Training female paralegals
Pilot projects are currently underway in Kandahar and Bamyan provinces, and will be completed in December 2008.
Already, 16 women have completed the paralegal programme, and 8 of them are working at a Legal Aid Referral centre in the city of Jalalabad.
Rights Awareness
UNIFEM is also working with a number of organizations on legal aid awareness programmes. These programmes include training on existing clauses in legal marriage certificates, so that women understand their rights and can act on them when signing the certificates.
Paralegal Manuals
The first of three manuals developed by UNIFEM is now in the final stage of completion, and is expected to be released soon. The manuals are to be made available in the Legal Aid Referral Centers being set up throughout the country.
