In 2006 the Government of Afghanistan will undergo the massive task of reviewing all existing trade laws and/or policies. This exercise will be supported by different international agencies and ministries. This paper will help stimulate discussion and inform policy-making processes around trade policies and their possible impacts on women and men. We believe that such discussions are important to analyze the dynamics between trade policies, gender inequalities, growth and poverty.

In May 2003 a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between UNIFEM, the UN World Food Programme (WFP), the Afghan Ministry for Women's Affairs (MOWA) and the Afghan Ministry for Rural Rehabilitation and Development (MMRD). "...the objective of the partnership is to ensure that the analysis of NRVA data, from the year 2003 onwards, will incorporate a strong gender perspective and that capacities for such analysis and the utilization of its outputs for gender advocacy, planning, policy formulation, budgeting, programming and monitoring are developed and institutionalized."
