| The companion volume to The Asia Foundation's recently released public-opinion survey titled Afghanistan in 2006: A Survey of the Afghan People. The papers in this volume analyze survey data on the opinions and perceptions of Afghans towards government, public policy, democracy, and political and social change as interpreted by social scientists familiar with the region. The contributors comment on trends, patterns, and variations owing to Afghan geography, ethnicity, and other factors, and assess comparatively Afghanistan's situation vis-à-vis other countries in the region. By combining analysis of quantitative survey data with broader contextual interpretations, the papers together anchor a holistic appraisal of change in the underlying sociopolitical realities and history of Afghanistan. |

| Conflict in Afghanistan has had a disproportionately negative impact on women. Afghan women have borne the brunt of the violence and remain subjected to practices that reflect gender biases. While the international community still hopes to 'liberate' and 'empower'
Afghan women in so-called post-conflict Afghanistan, gender programs are struggling to take gender (in a robust sense of the word) into account. Afghan women are fighting to reverse perceptions that they have no agency, that they are victims. Yet they are experiencing increased levels of violence. Despite being four years beyond conflict and into peace in Afghanistan, violence against women – particularly domestic violence – appears to be increasing. |

Months On", published in April 2003. |

| ...provides an overview of women's initiatives and activities in Afghanistan and examines the effectiveness of the international community's decision to emphasize women's rights and participation in advancing the status and role of women in Afghanistan. It makes the case that because women can foster stability and be a force for moderation, women's capacity must be further strengthened and their rights must not be bargained away. |

| Women's rights activists and journalists who have been outspoken on women's rights issues, such as human trafficking or violence against women, have reported death threats, visits to their homes by gunmen, and dismissals from their jobs or other obstructions of their work.
Often, expecting retaliation from armed political factions or religious conservatives, women's rights activists and women journalists refrain from directly criticizing warlords or discussing topics that could be perceived as challenging women's rights under Islamic law, such as divorce. The resulting atmosphere of fear and insecurity endangers women's full participation in the presidential elections and parliamentary and local elections scheduled for 2005. |
